What to Wear for Family Photos in Southern Utah
If I had a dollar for every time a client asked me, “What should we wear?” …I think I’d have enough money to keep myself stocked up on Watermelon Sugar drinks from Swig for a very long time. 😉
The truth is, choosing outfits is probably the most stressful part of planning family pictures for most parents.
You finally get everyone to agree on a date.
You convince the kids that family photos will actually be fun.
Then comes the outfit planning…
And suddenly you’re standing in front of your closet wondering if everyone has to match, if jeans are okay, or if you should buy a whole new wardrobe.
Take a deep breath.
It doesn’t have to be that complicated.
Instead of asking,
“What should we wear?”
I want you to ask,
“What feels like us?”
Years from now, I don’t want you to look at your family photos and think, “Wow…that outfit was trendy in 2026.”
I want you to look at them and remember how this season of life felt.
The laughter.
The hugs.
The little hands reaching for yours.
Your family’s personality should always be the star of the photo—not your clothes.
You Don’t Have to Match
This is probably the biggest misconception about family pictures.
Matching white shirts and blue jeans?
We can officially leave those in the past. 😄
Instead, think about coordinating.
Choose colors that look beautiful together without everyone wearing the exact same thing.
Some of my favorite Southern Utah color palettes include:
* Sage green
* Cream
* Soft white
* Dusty blue
* Warm tan
* Rust
* Muted mustard
* Soft blush
* Olive green
* Light brown
These colors photograph beautifully against our mountains, fields, and red rock landscapes.
Dress for the Season
One of my favorite things about Southern Utah is that every season has its own personality.
Summer sessions are one of my favorites.
Long evenings.
Golden sunshine.
Warm mountain air.
Flowy dresses, linen shirts, and lighter colors photograph beautifully during this time of year.
If we’re heading to Cedar Mountain, I always recommend bringing a light sweater or jacket. Even after a warm day, the evenings can cool down quickly.
Fall is cozy in the best possible way.
Think layers.
Sweaters.
Boots.
Earthy colors.
The changing leaves make almost every outfit look beautiful.
For Spring think soft pastels, floral dresses, light sweaters, and comfortable fabrics always photograph well.
Spring has such a fresh, joyful feeling.
For Winter, don’t be afraid of layers!
Scarves, coats, knit sweaters, and boots can make winter sessions feel warm and timeless.
Mom…
Can I Talk to You for a Minute?
As moms, we’re usually so busy making sure everyone else looks nice that we forget about ourselves.
Please don’t do that.
Choose something that makes you feel beautiful.
Not because you have to impress anyone.
But because when you feel confident, you naturally relax.
And when you relax…
Your family does too.
One of my favorite things about photographing families is watching moms stop worrying about everyone’s shirts being tucked in and simply enjoy their kids.
Those are always the best moments.
Dads…
I promise you don’t have to wear anything fancy.
A well-fitting henley, button-up shirt, sweater, or simple neutral-colored t-shirt paired with nice jeans or chinos photographs wonderfully.
The goal isn’t to look uncomfortable.
It’s to look like yourself on your very best day.
Shoes Matter More Than You Think
I know this sounds funny…
But people notice shoes.
Athletic sneakers can sometimes pull attention away from an otherwise timeless outfit.
Neutral boots, sandals, loafers, or simple clean shoes usually photograph much better.
And if we’re photographing somewhere grassy or on Cedar Mountain…
Barefoot kiddos are almost always adorable.
Accessories
Less is usually more.
A cute hat.
Simple jewelry.
A textured blanket.
A bouquet of wildflowers.
Those little details can add personality without distracting from what really matters.
You know what nobody notices?
Whether your shirt came from a boutique or Target.
What people notice is connection.
The way your daughter wraps her arms around your neck.
Your son laughing because Dad made a silly joke.
Your toddler showing everyone the coolest stick they found five minutes earlier.
Those are the things that make a photograph priceless.
Don’t Stress About Perfection
I know it’s tempting to want everything to be perfect.
Perfect outfits.
Perfect smiles.
Perfect kids.
But if there’s one thing motherhood has taught me, it’s that perfection isn’t where the magic happens.
The magic happens in the messy hugs.
The wind-blown hair.
The belly laughs.
The tiny hands reaching for yours.
That’s the story I want your gallery to tell.
