Why Summer Might Just Be My Favorite Season for Family Pictures
If you ask me what my favorite season is, I’ll probably have a hard time choosing between summer and fall. I absolutely love the cozy colors of autumn, but there’s just something about summer that makes me come alive.
Long evenings.
Warm sunshine.
Barefoot kids running through the grass.
Mountain air.
The sound of laughter carrying through a field while the sun slowly disappears behind the mountains.
Summer feels like freedom.
Maybe that’s why it’s one of my favorite times of year to photograph families. Summer Is Full of the Moments You’ll Want to Remember. As parents, we don’t always realize how quickly life changes until we look back. One day your toddler insists on wearing rain boots with every outfit. The next, they’re riding a bike without training wheels. The little curls disappear. The baby teeth fall out. Suddenly, your kids don’t reach for your hand quite as often.
As a mom to two busy little boys, I think about this all the time.
Right now my house is full of monster trucks, construction vehicles, balls bouncing through the living room, muddy shoes by the back door, and little boys who somehow find a way to get dirty whether we’re outside or inside. Some days are exhausting. Most days are messy. But I already know I’m going to miss this season someday. That’s one of the biggest reasons I love family photography.
Because we never get to be this age again.
One thing I hear from parents all the time is: “I’m nervous my kids won’t cooperate.” Can I tell you a little secret?
They don’t have to.
Some of my favorite photographs happen when kids are simply being kids. Running. Laughing. Exploring. Picking flowers. Showing me their favorite rock they found five minutes earlier. Those little moments tell your family’s story so much better than perfectly folded hands and forced smiles ever could. Of course we’ll capture those classic portraits where everyone is looking at the camera (those are usually the ones Grandma frames on her wall!), but the moments in between are almost always my favorites.
The way your daughter wraps her arms around your neck.
Your son reaching for your hand.
The giggles after Dad tells a silly joke.
Those are the moments you’ll treasure years from now.
Cedar City Is Beautiful During the Summer
One of my favorite things about living in Southern Utah is that we don’t have to travel far to find incredible scenery. Depending on the look you’re hoping for, we have so many beautiful options nearby.
If you love mountain views and cooler temperatures, Cedar Mountain is one of my favorite places to photograph during the summer. The fresh mountain air, tall pine trees, and soft evening light create such a peaceful setting.
If you’re dreaming of open fields, golden sunshine, or wide mountain views, there are so many hidden spots around Cedar City that become absolutely magical during the summer months.
Every family is different, and I love helping each one choose a location that feels like them.
What Should You Wear for Summer Family Photos?
The biggest piece of advice I give every family is this: Choose outfits that feel comfortable. If you’re constantly adjusting your clothes or worrying about wrinkles, it’s harder to relax and enjoy the experience.
Soft, neutral colors photograph beautifully in Southern Utah’s natural landscapes. Creams, sage greens, dusty blues, soft browns, and muted earth tones all work wonderfully.
Instead of matching exactly, choose colors that complement each other. Your family doesn’t need to look identical. You just need to look like yourselves. You Don’t Need Perfect Kids.
Social media has convinced so many parents that family photos have to be perfect.
Perfect outfits.
Perfect smiles.
Perfect behavior.
Real life isn’t like that.
And honestly…
I don’t want it to be.
Some of my favorite galleries include toddlers making funny faces, kids chasing each other through a field, parents laughing because absolutely nothing is going according to plan, and little moments that couldn’t have been posed if we tried.
Those are the memories your children will smile about someday. Those are the photographs that feel alive.
One day your kids will be grown. The monster trucks will be packed away. The tiny fingerprints on the windows will disappear. The bedtime stories will become memories. The season you’re living right now won’t last forever.
That’s why I believe family photographs are so much more than pictures. They’re reminders. They’re time capsules. They’re proof that this beautiful, messy, wonderful season happened. And years from now, I hope you’ll look at these images and remember exactly how it felt to have little hands reaching for yours.

Hi! I’m Lindsey.
I’m a Southern Utah photographer, a wife, and a mom to two adventurous little boys who have taught me that life is almost always better with dirty shoes, scraped knees, and a little imagination.
When we’re not taking photos, you’ll usually find us outside. We love hiking, camping, off-roading, hammocking, playing at the park, or simply spending time together. Quality time is my love language, and some of my favorite memories are the simple ones—watching my boys discover something new or laughing together on a summer evening.
I also have a serious sweet tooth, almost always have a Beach Babe drink from Swig in hand during editing, and I’m definitely a night owl (even though my kids don’t seem to believe in sleeping in!).
When I photograph your family, I don’t expect perfection. I want the real smiles, the silly moments, the bear hugs, and the tiny details that make your family uniquely yours.
