I feel like fall family photos are one of those things I look forward to all year long. There is just something about the changing leaves, cooler weather, cozy outfits, and watching families run around together that makes my photographer heart VERY happy.
And this year?! I have been so incredibly thankful for all of the families who trusted me with their fall family photos. I got to photograph SO many sweet families this season, and every single session was a little different.
Some kids were running wild. Some were a little shy. Some wanted to explore every inch of our location. Some gave me the biggest smiles the second they realized there were no more photos to take. đ And honestly? I love all of it.
Because family photos donât have to be perfectly posed the entire time.
Actually, I think some of my favorite photos happen in between the poses.
The little hugs. The giggles. The kids holding hands. Dad making mom laugh. Mom fixing someoneâs hair for the 47th time. The toddler who absolutely refuses to look at the camera but is having the time of their life.
THOSE are the moments I want to remember.
A Few Tips for Your Next Fall Family Session
đ 1. Donât stress about getting everyone to smile
I promise you, I am used to it.
If your toddler doesnât want to smile right away, thatâs okay! We can play, walk around, snuggle, talk, or let them be silly for a minute.
Sometimes the biggest smiles happen when we stop trying so hard to get one.
đ 2. Pick outfits that feel like YOU
Fall is the perfect time for warm neutrals, soft colors, denim, sweaters, boots, dresses, and lots of layers.
You donât have to match everyone perfectly. In fact, I usually recommend coordinating instead of matching.
Think about colors that look good together rather than putting everyone in the exact same shade.
And pleaseâwear something you can actually move around in!
Especially if you have little kids. There is a very good chance weâre going to be walking, sitting, playing, snuggling, and maybe chasing someone. đ
đ 3. Let your kids be kids
This one is probably my biggest tip.
Your family photos donât have to look like everyone stood perfectly still for 30 minutes.
I want to capture your family as you actually are.
Let your kids laugh. Let them play. Pick them up. Give them kisses. Hold hands. Tell them a silly joke.
Those little interactions are what make your gallery feel like YOUR family.
đ 4. Donât worry if you feel awkward
I hear this all the time.
âI am SO awkward in photos.â
Good news: most people feel that way!
You donât have to know what to do with your hands or how to pose. Thatâs my job.
Iâll guide you through it and give you little prompts that help things feel natural. Before you know it, youâre not thinking about the camera anymore.
And thatâs usually when we get the good stuff. â¤ď¸
đ 5. Remember why youâre doing this
This one is my favorite.
Your kids arenât going to be this age forever.
They wonât always have those little cheeks. They wonât always hold your hand the same way. They wonât always run up and jump into your arms.
We will never be exactly who we are in this moment again.
And I think thatâs why I love family photography so much.
Itâs not really about getting a pretty picture for your wall.
Itâs about freezing a tiny piece of your life exactly as it is right now.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You
I truly cannot say this enoughâthank you to every family who booked a fall mini session with me this year.
Thank you for trusting me with your memories.
Thank you for letting me chase your kids around.
Thank you for laughing with me when things didnât go exactly as planned.
Thank you for showing up even when you werenât sure your kids were going to cooperate.
And thank you for allowing me to be a tiny part of your familyâs story.
This fall has been such a fun reminder of why I started photography in the first place. I love meeting new families, watching little personalities come out during sessions, and getting to capture these tiny seasons of life that go by WAY too quickly.
I am already looking forward to next yearâs fall sessions. đ
A Little Bit About Lindsey đ¤
Hi! Iâm Lindseyâthe photographer behind Lindsey Larsen Photography here in Southern Utah.
Iâm a mom, a dog mom, a photographer, and someone who genuinely loves getting to freeze lifeâs little moments for people.
I especially love photographing families, weddings, elopements, and seniors, but family sessions will always have a special place in my heart.
I know how quickly life changes because Iâm living it too. One minute youâre holding a tiny baby, and the next youâre wondering how your kid got so big. Thatâs why I want your photos to feel like more than just a bunch of perfectly posed pictures.
I want you to look back at them years from now and remember how your kids laughed, how tiny their hands were, how your family felt, and what this season of life looked like.
Because we only get this moment once.
And Iâm pretty lucky that I get to help you remember it. đ¤
